A useful meta description helps someone decide whether a page answers their question. Start with the specific task the page solves, add one or two concrete details, and remove promises the page cannot support.
This guide works through three fictional page briefs, then shows how to review a description with the SERP Snippet Preview and generate its HTML. The example copy is a drafting exercise, not a claim about products or services offered on this website.
Understand what the description can influence
A meta description is page metadata. Google often builds a search snippet from visible page content and may use the description when it is more suitable. The same page can receive different snippets for different searches. Writing a description does not guarantee that Google will display it verbatim.
Google also does not define a fixed character limit for meta descriptions; displayed snippets can be shortened to fit the available space. Its snippet guidance recommends relevant descriptions that distinguish individual pages. Treat a preview as an editing aid, not a promise about the final search result.
Write from a short page brief
Before drafting, note three things: who the page helps, what they can do with it, and which details make it useful. Use those notes to replace generic phrases such as “everything you need to know.”
Example 1: a beginner tutorial
Page brief: A balcony gardening guide covers container sizes, drainage and a watering checklist for basil and mint.
Weak draft: “Discover the best gardening tips and everything about growing amazing plants.”
Revised draft: “Plan a first balcony herb garden with container sizes, drainage checks and a watering checklist for basil and mint.”
The revision names the setting, the plants and the practical help. A reader can judge the fit without relying on an unexplained claim that the advice is “best.” If the guide does not include container sizes, remove that detail or improve the guide before using the description.
Example 2: a product detail page
Page brief: A fictional shop sells an A5 dotted notebook with numbered pages and a contents page. The product page shows interior photographs.
Weak draft: “Notebook, dotted notebook, journal, planner, buy notebooks online.”
Revised draft: “Explore an A5 dotted notebook with numbered pages and a contents page. View the interior layout before choosing your next journal.”
This gives the buyer something to evaluate. Avoid adding a price, delivery deadline or availability claim unless the page and your maintenance process keep that information current.
Example 3: a service information page
Page brief: A fictional bicycle workshop lists puncture repair options, opening hours and appointment instructions.
Weak draft: “Welcome to our website. We offer excellent service for all your needs.”
Revised draft: “Check bicycle puncture repair options, workshop opening hours and how to book an appointment before bringing in your bike.”
The revision describes the information available before the visit. It avoids inventing same-day repairs, low prices or guarantees that the brief did not establish.
Preview the most useful words first
- Open the SERP Snippet Preview.
- Enter
Balcony Herb Garden: A Beginner Checklistin Title tag. - Use
https://example.com/balcony-herb-garden/as the demonstration Page URL. - Paste the revised gardening description into Meta description.
- Compare the Desktop and Mobile sample layouts.
The description contains 115 characters in the tool. Its sample boundaries are 160 description characters for Desktop and 120 for Mobile. Those are this tool’s presets, not Google requirements. Do not add filler simply because a counter leaves room.
Read the opening phrase without the rest of the sentence. “Plan a first balcony herb garden” already explains the task. If your description begins with a long slogan, move the useful information forward. Review the paired title with our title-tag examples.
Save the description in the correct place
For an HTML page, the description uses a meta element in the document head. The gardening example becomes:
<meta name="description" content="Plan a first balcony herb garden with container sizes, drainage checks and a watering checklist for basil and mint.">
The MDN metadata reference explains the relationship between the name and content attributes. You can generate this line with the Meta Tag Generator by entering the title and description and selecting Generate Meta Tags.
That tool produces additional head tags as well. Review the generated block before using it. If your CMS or SEO plugin already manages descriptions, edit its existing description field instead of adding a second block of metadata.
Make one final content check
Open the saved public page and inspect its source for name="description". Confirm that there is one intended description and that the wording matches the page. Then read the visible content against every promise in your draft. A specific, accurate description is a better finishing point than a colored counter alone.
