How to Use Placeholder Text to Test a Page Layout

A card can look balanced with a two-word heading and fall apart when an editor adds a longer title. Placeholder text helps expose those layout problems before the final copy is ready. Use it in a local mockup or private preview to check wrapping, spacing and content length, then repeat the checks with the real text before publishing.

Choose the content shapes you need to test

Start with one representative component, such as an article card with a heading, description, three bullet points and a link. Create a short, typical and long version of its content. Testing only identical text in every card can hide uneven heights and awkward gaps.

For this example, use the original English headings Image formats and Choosing the right image format for a product page. The second heading tests a different wrapping pattern. These are sample labels, not recommendations for a live page.

Generate body text with the actual controls

Open the Lorem Ipsum Generator. Its Generate menu offers Paragraphs, Sentences, Words and List items. The How many field accepts a count from 1 to 50; the count refers to the selected unit. Two paragraphs are not the same request as two words.

  1. Select Paragraphs, enter 1 and leave Wrap in HTML tags unchecked for a text field.
  2. Choose whether to keep the Start with checkbox enabled, then press Generate.
  3. Use Copy or select the result manually. Paste it into the description area of your private preview.
  4. Make a shorter description by keeping one sentence. Generate another paragraph for the longer version. Keep these examples clearly marked as temporary.

Use Words when you want a specified number of space-separated placeholder words. That can help vary a test label, but use meaningful English headings as well: unfamiliar Latin-style text will not show whether a heading communicates the right idea.

Check formatting before pasting

Selecting Wrap in HTML tags produces markup rather than formatted rich text. For example, paragraph output includes <p> tags, and List items can produce <ul> and <li> tags. Paste markup only into an appropriate HTML editing area in your test copy.

Check the pasted result before testing the layout. Keep paragraph breaks and list structure intact so the preview reflects the component you want to assess. Once the real copy is ready, use the separate word-limit checking workflow if the finished draft must meet a submission limit.

Run a small layout test matrix

Keep the same component styles while changing one content shape at a time. Record the result so a visual change can be checked again later.

  • Short content: a short heading and one sentence. Check whether the link sits in a sensible position.
  • Long content: the longer English heading and additional body text. Look for clipped text, overlapping elements and excessive gaps between adjacent cards.
  • A list: three items, with one deliberately longer than the others. Check bullet alignment, indentation and wrapping.
  • An unbroken value: add the invented token previewAssetVersion20261014WithExtraDetails. This exposes problems that ordinary spaces may conceal.

A long unbroken string can extend beyond a narrow container. MDN explains text wrapping and overflow, including how overflow-wrap can help. Hiding overflow can conceal missing content, so investigate the affected component rather than making clipped text look tidy.

Check narrow screens and enlarged text

Repeat the matrix at desktop and narrow widths, then use browser zoom. For ordinary vertically scrolling text, W3C guidance on reflow describes presenting content at a width equivalent to 320 CSS pixels without losing information or functionality or requiring scrolling in both directions. Some content, such as maps and data tables, has specific exceptions.

Also test user-adjusted spacing in the preview: line height of 1.5 times the font size, paragraph spacing of 2 times, letter spacing of 0.12 times and word spacing of 0.16 times. W3C guidance on text spacing requires content to tolerate those overrides without loss; it does not require these values as the default design. Look for headings covering descriptions or buttons cutting off their labels.

Replace placeholders before the final review

Repeat the checks with actual headings, names, numbers, links and the intended font. For heading cleanup, follow the sentence-case guide and preserve product names. Include real language samples if the page will support more than English.

Remove every temporary paragraph and test token before release. Placeholder testing can reveal layout defects, but it cannot establish readability, correct meaning, successful translation or complete accessibility. Review the finished content and interactions separately.
