Open Graph tags control what Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack and most other platforms show when someone pastes your link. Without them the share is a bare URL with whatever text the platform guesses. This generator produces the full set: og:type, og:url, og:title, og:description, og:image with width and height, og:site_name and og:locale, plus article:author and article:published_time when you choose the article type.

The preview card on the right of the output shows the shape of a real share: image on top, domain in small caps, then the headline and description. Titles are generally cut near 88 characters and descriptions near 200, so the preview trims at those points. Use a 1200 by 630 pixel image, roughly 1.91 to 1, and give it an absolute https URL because relative paths are ignored by every scraper.

How to use the Open Graph Generator

  1. Choose og:type, then paste the full page URL into og:url.
  2. Write the og:title and og:description you want people to see in the share card.
  3. Add an absolute image URL, ideally a 1200 by 630 pixel image, plus your site name and locale.
  4. Copy the generated tags into your page head, then re-scrape the URL in the platform debugger so the old preview is refreshed.

Frequently asked questions

What size should the og:image be?

1200 by 630 pixels is the safe default, an aspect ratio of about 1.91 to 1. Keep the file under roughly 5 MB and use JPG or PNG. Anything smaller than 600 by 315 tends to be shown as a small square thumbnail instead of a full width card.

Why does Facebook still show my old image?

Platforms cache the scraped preview, often for weeks. After updating your tags, run the URL through the Facebook sharing debugger or LinkedIn post inspector and request a fresh scrape. Changing the image filename also forces a new fetch since the cache is keyed to the URL.

Do I need Open Graph tags if I already have Twitter card tags?

Yes, and the reverse also works. Twitter and X fall back to Open Graph when twitter: tags are missing, but Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and Slack read only Open Graph. Having og: tags covers the widest range of platforms with one set of markup.

Do Open Graph tags help SEO?

Not directly. Google does not use og: tags as a ranking signal. They matter because a clear title and image raise the click rate on shared links, which brings traffic and the kind of engagement that often leads to genuine links back to the page.
