Why You Should Keep UTM Tags Off Internal Links

A homepage button and a link in a partner calendar can lead to the same workshop page, but they answer different measurement questions. The partner link identifies where a visitor arrived from. The homepage button records a choice made after someone is already browsing your site.

For ordinary links between your own pages, keep campaign tags out of the destination and measure the click separately when needed. Use UTM parameters for the external campaign placements you intend to identify.

Classify the placement before building the link

Imagine a fictional ceramics studio with this destination:

https://example.com/workshops/?level=beginner

The level=beginner parameter selects a page state in this example. It is not a campaign label. Write a small placement inventory before changing any links:

Placement Question Link plan
A partner calendar on another website Did this external listing bring visitors? A campaign URL with agreed source, medium and campaign values
A homepage workshop banner Did visitors select this banner? The destination without UTM tags, plus appropriate click measurement
The workshop navigation menu Did visitors navigate to workshops? The destination without UTM tags

Do not decide from the destination hostname alone. All three links lead to your site; their placement and measurement purpose differ. Cross-domain journeys and payment services need a separate measurement plan rather than a blanket same-site rule.

Understand the GA4 distinction accurately

Google describes UTMs as campaign parameters for identifying traffic referred to your property in its campaign URL guidance. They are not a substitute for naming every navigation click.

Avoid the old claim that encountering another campaign always starts a new GA4 session. Google’s campaign and traffic-source documentation says it does not. New campaign values collected during an existing session can be associated with those events and used for event-based attribution; they are not assigned to that existing session.

That distinction is the reason for this workflow: keep external acquisition labels separate from internal interaction labels. Do not diagnose a session split or a changed report from the URL alone. You need the collected events, report scope and measurement configuration to investigate an actual discrepancy.

Build only the external campaign version

Use the UTM Campaign URL Builder for the fictional partner-calendar placement:

  1. Enter https://example.com/workshops/?level=beginner in Website URL.
  2. Set Campaign source to Partner Calendar, Campaign medium to Referral and Campaign name to Winter Ceramics.
  3. Leave the optional ID, term and content fields empty for this example.
  4. Keep Lowercase all parameter values and Replace spaces with hyphens checked, then select Build URL.

The result should be:

https://example.com/workshops/?level=beginner&utm_source=partner-calendar&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=winter-ceramics

The tool retains the page-state parameter in this fixture and shows the three campaign values in its breakdown. Choose labels that match your actual reporting convention. For several links in an email, the newsletter campaign guide explains a separate placement-naming procedure.

The builder does not know where you will place the result. It cannot approve an internal-link policy or confirm Analytics collection. Its source, medium and campaign fields are required, so it is not an empty-field cleaner for stripping tags.

Repair an internal link without losing page state

Suppose the homepage button currently points here:

https://example.com/workshops/?level=beginner&utm_source=homepage&utm_medium=banner&utm_campaign=winter-ceramics

In the website editor, replace that button destination with the original untagged workshop address. Retain level=beginner. Removing everything after the question mark would discard the intended page state too.

Save the page, open its public version and follow the actual button. Confirm that the beginner view opens and that the final destination has no unintended campaign tags. Repeat for mobile navigation, reusable banners and translated templates if those placements exist. Our UTM parameter audit covers the different task of repairing repeated tags in external campaign URLs.

Measure the interaction with a separate plan

For ecommerce promotions, Google documents view_promotion and select_promotion in its internal promotion measurement instructions. These need an implementation with the appropriate item information; renaming a URL does not install them.

For another kind of button, define its click-measurement requirements with the person maintaining your Analytics setup. Record the page, placement, destination and intended event separately from external campaign labels. Test that one deliberate click produces the expected collection, without assuming that removing UTMs created tracking.

Keep the approved external campaign URL and internal destination in different worksheet columns. This makes the next banner or newsletter update easier to review and reduces the chance of copying the campaign version into the site menu.
